This page was built by a Year 10 pupil with no prior knowledge of html coding. In the course of 4 Functional Skills lessons, of 45 minutes each, he followed spoken and written instructions to create a web page on a topic of his choice in Notepad, previewing it in his local browser. The assignment required him to ask specific questions to learn how to achieve given effects beyond the very basics of saving the page and centralising, and to use question & answer techniques to discover how to correct errors or disfunction. This allowed us to collect very clear evidence of his use of Speaking & Listening skills in a specific, real life context. In terms of content, the pupils were not required to create original material. In the work place, copywriting and photography are specialist jobs often contracted out to agencies. However copy/paste and accurate input skills are a vital basic in many office based or self employment situations. Functional Skills in I.C.T. does require demonstration of the ability to search for specific information on the internet, as well as to show skills in taking this into the new context. The pupils in our school (generally, not necessarily MC) have many difficulties with making choices of topic, literacy skills and self-confidence. A significant amount of time can be wasted in getting going, so using a different project and one of personal passion helps overcome these initial problems. Posting the page to our server as early as possible gave great satisfaction and motivated in the edit & refinement stage. From here, we can expand this project, making the next page in the site one where the text is produced in part by the pupil. Clearly the Functional Skills possibilities are plenty, but producing a basic piece of text will allow us to assess some Writing Functional Skills. We will be using various programs to produce or manipulate images, text and charts. The Maths Functional Skills will thereby come into this project; the I.C.T. Functional Skills broadening. At the end of the sessions we completed a three page checklist of skills with very minimal sections for pupils' creative expression. This pupil gave himself the full 5 Stars for enjoyment, effort and achievement. I fully agree with him, especially his judgement that this is a real, high standard page on the internet. It does not look out of place! Teacher tweaks to the page: I floated the very first image and added the last two lines below the bottom gallery. RN, WMX, February 2009 |
