Mini Biography

The youngest of four sisters who grew up on a ranch near Corpus Christi, Texas, Longoria attended Texas A&M University-Kingsville, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology. After graduating from college, she entered a talent contest that brought her to Los Angeles, where she was spotted and subsequently signed by a theatrical agent. After landing roles on "The Bold and the Beautiful" (1987), "General Hospital" (1963) and co-starring on "Beverly Hills, 90210" (1990), she auditioned for and won the role of "Isabella" on the popular series, "The Young and the Restless" (1973). After Y&R, Eva Longoria became well known worldwide thanks to "Desperate Housewives" (2004) where she plays adulteress "Gabrielle Solis". She also has a contract with L'Oreal and has been named one of the most beautiful people.

Longoria landed her first television role in 2000, guest-starring in an episode of Beverly Hills, 90210. Another guest appearance in General Hospital the same year brought her big break on the popular American soap opera The Young and the Restless, in which she played psychotic Isabella Braña Williams from 2001 to 2003. People en Español listed her a mong its "Most Beautiful People" for 2003. After leaving The Young and the Restless, she was seen on the now-cancelled Dick Wolf revival of Dragnet. Although it lasted only two seasons, the show gave Longoria another leading star credit to her name. Following Dragnet, she starred in two ill-fated productions - Señorita Justice, a poorly received direct-to-video film, and a television film titled The Dead Will Tell. In 2004, Longoria landed a role that elevated her to the A-List. She starred as adulteress Gabrielle Solis in the worldwide break-out ABC hit Desperate Housewives. As the show became an overnight sensation, Longoria's career was well and truly launched. But she has never considered her career to have jumped off so suddenly: "I think it’s funny when people say I’m an overnight sensation, because I’ve been working at it for 10 years."

Shortly after her debut on Desperate Housewives, Longoria starred in a poorly received direct-to-video film titled Carlita's Secret, for which she was also co-producer. In 2005, she was rewarded for her performance as Gabrielle Solis in Desperate Housewives when she was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy along with her co-stars. Even though neither Longoria nor any of the rest of the cast won, she was awarded the ALMA Award and named entertainer of the year. She also starred opposite Michael Douglas and Kiefer Sutherland in the 2006 thriller The Sentinel, which was her first major role in a theatrical movie. In 2006 she played the character Sylvia in Harsh Times starring Freddy Rodriguez and Christian Bale. (Text taken from: Wikipedia article.)

Educational Notes

This page was built by a Year 10 pupil with no prior knowledge of html coding.   In the course of 4 Functional Skills lessons, of 45 minutes each, he followed spoken and written instructions to create a web page on a topic of his choice in Notepad, previewing it in his local browser.   The assignment required him to ask specific questions to learn how to achieve given effects beyond the very basics of saving the page and centralising, and to use question & answer techniques to discover how to correct errors or disfunction.  This allowed us to collect very clear evidence of his use of Speaking & Listening skills in a specific, real life context.

In terms of content, the pupils were not required to create original material. In the work place, copywriting and photography are specialist jobs often contracted out to agencies. However copy/paste and accurate input skills are a vital basic in many office based or self employment situations.  Functional Skills in I.C.T. does require demonstration of the ability to search for specific information on the internet, as well as to show skills in taking this into the new context.

The pupils in our school (generally,  not necessarily MC) have many difficulties with making choices of topic, literacy skills and self-confidence.  A significant amount of time can be wasted in getting going, so using a different project and one of personal passion helps overcome these initial problems.   Posting the page to our server as early as possible gave great satisfaction and motivated in the edit & refinement stage.

From here, we can expand this project, making the next page in the site one where the text is produced in part by the pupil.   Clearly the Functional Skills possibilities are plenty, but producing a basic piece of text will allow us to assess some Writing Functional Skills.   We will be using various programs to produce or manipulate images, text and charts.   The Maths Functional Skills will thereby come into this project; the I.C.T. Functional Skills broadening.

At the end of the sessions we completed a three page checklist of skills with very minimal sections for pupils' creative expression.   This pupil gave himself the full 5 Stars for enjoyment, effort and achievement.  I fully agree with him, especially his judgement that this is a real, high standard page on the internet.  It does not look out of place!

Teacher tweaks to the page:  I floated the very first image and added the last two lines below the bottom gallery.                                                                                             RN, WMX, February 2009
